Geography
The Russian Federation is located in the northern hemisphere of the Eurasia continent. The territory of Russia is bordered by the waters of the Pacific Ocean, Arctic Ocean, the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The Urals serves as the border between the Asian and European parts of Russia. The Asian part includes Siberia and the Far East.
The territory of Russia is characterized by varied topography. The main mountain ranges are the Caucasus, the Urals, the Altai and the Sayan Mountains. The central part of Russia is located in the territory of the East European Plain and the West Siberian Plain. The biggest rivers are the Volga, Lena, Irtysh, Enisey, Ob and Amur. The largest lakes of the country are Baikal, Caspian (sea), Ladozhskoe Lake and Onezhskoe Lake. The country (from north to south) is composed of the following climatic zones: arctic, tundra, forest-tundra, forest-steppe, steppe and semi-desert. The largest part of Russian territory is located in the continental and arctic climatic zones. The average annual temperature is -5.5 degrees. More than 70% of the territory is risk farming. The agricultural season in most parts of the country lasts for two to three months. There are plenty of forests: they take up more than half of the country. One-fifth of all forests in the world grow in Russia. There are 25 national parks and 84 national preservation parks.
